Shaggy’s in Gulfport, MS
Have you ever came across a hidden gem that’s been right in your face for years? Believe it or not Shaggy’s in Gulfport, MS was one of those places! I have lived on the coast and in New Orleans for the majority of my life until after high school. I can not tell you how many times my family and I have traveled to Gulfport to go shopping, to the beach, or visiting different casino; Along with many other things. I kid you not, we have PASSED UP and even been right in FRONT of Shaggy’s so many times and never even thought to go eat there! Let me tell you why I can’t believe we never thought to go across the street to this place.
Shaggy’s is a very calm and laid back type of tropical restaurant for all ages. Being at Shaggy’s makes you feel like your sitting at home relaxing on the back patio on a beautiful day enjoying the outside breeze. It’s one of those places where you wish you could feel like that all the time. For your seating options, you can either choose from sitting inside where they normally have all the windows open along with the fans on; Or you can be outside on the pier at one of the many picnic style tables or bar. I highly recommend sitting outside if the weather permits it. The best time to sit outside is right before the sun starts to set. The view of the beach from the outside sitting area is beyond beautiful; along with seeing the lights of the restaurant come to life-changing the entire atmosphere and vibe of the space. If you are a drinker, I can definitely admit I would go back just for a drink if I could. They offer a bunch of really awesome frozen drinks. I did opt for their version of Pina colada and it was amazing. I haven’t tasted anything like it before and the server was sweet enough to put it on the house because I was having a hard time picking a drink I wanted. No kidding, guys I literally went through at least 2/3 different kinds of drinks before ending up with the one I loved. We did happen to visit the restaurant some months after postpartum pregnancy and it was one of my first times being out with my husband on a vacation. All my Moms out there that had to wait for that drink knows what I’m talking about!
Besides the great drinks, if you’re a person that loves chips and queso you HAVE to try the chips and queso at Shaggy’s! The queso is to die for and worth any trip back to the coast! The chips are in-house made, the flavors are spot on they are so light but thick and crispy with the right amount of dusted salt on them. The cheese is super creamy perfectly made just enough spice without being over barring. If you ever had queso anywhere you know how some get thick and hard when it’s cooling down after a while? The queso at Shaggy’s doesn’t get hard even after it’s cold! My husband and I had to have had that cheese for little over an hour and even though it had gotten cold it was still soft and creamy. It definitely has had to be the best chips and queso we have ever had.
